Why 5 AM is the Worst Time for a Prop Firm Trader

The '5 AM club' productivity advice is wrong for prop traders. Here's the schedule that actually works for the NY session.

Most productivity gurus push the '5 AM wake up' routine. For prop firm traders this is actively harmful — by the time NY session opens at 9:30 ET, you've been awake for 4.5 hours and your decision-making has already started to degrade.

Optimal schedule for an NY-session prop trader (East Coast):

7:00 AM — Wake up. 8 hours of sleep should be non-negotiable.

7:30 AM — Workout or walk. Get blood moving, do not look at charts.

8:30 AM — Breakfast + coffee, no screens.

9:00 AM — 20-minute pre-market routine. Review economic calendar, identify levels, set max trade count.

9:30 AM — Session start. You are fresh, fed, and focused.

11:30 AM — Session close (most prop strategies end here).

If you're trading from California (Pacific time): 4:30 AM wake, 6:30 AM session start. This is genuinely brutal and is why so few full-time prop traders live on the West Coast. Either move east or trade Asia session.

Sleep is your edge. A tired trader takes worse setups, sizes incorrectly, and rationalizes rule violations. There is no productivity hack that beats 8 hours of sleep.
